Overview

Ring manufactures video doorbells and security cameras designed for residential use. Their product lineup includes wired and battery-powered cameras, video doorbells, and floodlight cameras that homeowners use to monitor their properties. Seam integrates with Ring cameras and doorbells to provide motion detection events, doorbell press events, event clips and thumbnails, and device status monitoring.
Ring is available in the default Connect Webview provider list. Ring cameras, including motion and doorbell events and event media, are in beta. Motion and doorbell events list media_ids for the event’s clip and thumbnail, which you retrieve with /media/get. Live video streaming is not available for Ring devices.

Supported Devices

Every Ring device that Seam supports, including Ring video doorbells, has the ring_camera device type. To list a user’s Ring devices, filter by device_type: "ring_camera". For detailed information about the Ring devices that Seam supports, see our Ring Supported Devices page.

Supported Features

Doorbell press events (device.doorbell_rang) come only from Ring doorbell models. Seam doesn’t use a separate device type for doorbells.

Brand-Specific Restrictions

  • Ring Protect subscription required for event clips and thumbnails and some motion detection features. Devices without an active subscription may fire limited events, and /media/get returns a 404 media_not_available error for their event media. The media’s status stays available.
  • Media follows Ring’s retention. Seam doesn’t copy Ring media. Each /media/get call requests a new signed URL from Ring, so media is only available while the Ring account’s Ring Protect plan keeps the recording.
  • No live view. Seam doesn’t offer live video streaming for Ring devices.
  • Account re-linking must be done through the Ring app. If a user’s Ring account tokens expire, they need to re-link via the Connect flow — there is no automatic re-auth path.

Brand-Specific Events

Seam fires the following camera-specific events for Ring devices:
  • camera.activated — Fired when a Ring camera or doorbell detects motion. Includes activation_reason, motion_sub_type (human, vehicle, package, or other), and media_ids.
  • device.doorbell_rang — Fired when a Ring doorbell button is pressed. Includes media_ids.
Pass each ID in media_ids to /media/get to get the clip (video) or thumbnail (image) and a short-lived signed URL issued by Ring. Call /media/get again for a new URL rather than caching it. Ring media is available as soon as the event arrives, and its expires_at is null because it follows the Ring account’s retention. Both events still include image_url and video_url for compatibility. On new events, these point to /media/get with format=redirect and require the same authentication as any other Seam API request. New integrations should use media_ids.

Device Provider Key

Seam identifies these devices with the ring device provider key. By default, a Connect Webview displays all of the stable providers that Seam supports, so your users can connect their Ring devices without you specifying a provider list. To narrow what a Connect Webview displays, see Customize the Brands to Display in Your Connect Webviews.
